When you get back to work after a long break even just getting into the routine of working every day feels like a lesson to learn. The one advice that holds true – No matter who you are or what you do, Don’t give up!

I am a qualified occupational Therapist. After graduation I worked as a therapist for a while but I realised my heart wasn’t in it. I grew up painting murals on the walls of my room and large stain glass panels for our home. So, I automatically drifted towards interior design.
I had taken a break from my career to raise my kids. I was looking for a way to get back to work without leaving them home alone for long hours. As a cousin suggested I start blogging as a way to channelize my creativity from the comfort of home.
WOI feature- Ariyona InteriorsSince I eventually wanted to get back to interiors, I realised it would also be a great platform to showcase my work and get new business in. Over time I have come to realise that I enjoy blogging as much as interiors. They are now both an equal and integral part of my work. They complete each other. I used blogging and social media to build my brand, the most difficult part was to understand social media. My maximum knowledge of social media before business was sharing photographs with friends on Facebook. I didn’t even have an Instagram account and had barely ever read a blog, forget writing one.

So starting from scratch on all of this was difficult. Luckily I was sitting at home with not much else to do except keep an eye on the kids. So with lots of time, patience and unending help from ‘Google’ I managed to launch my blog and social media accounts. I was SO happy when I heard the words ‘I follow your blog and love your work. Will you help me with my living room?’ and that is how I made my first sale.

The journey has only just begun, and I have miles to go before I sleep. All the little milestones we touch along the way are like little stepping-stones to reach our destination. Last year we had 1 lakh blog views. We also have over 2 million monthly unique viewers on our Pinterest page and over 20k followers on Instagram now. Each one of these encourages me to aim higher and reach for more.

My family has always been encouraging of my work. Little things like doing without me on Saturdays when they all have a holiday make a big difference. The kids love to check on how many followers I have on which account. They are as excited as me every time I reach a new milestone.

I absolutely love my work. A good blog post, a beautifully designed room, even selecting a perfect fabric or just the right cushion cover, and a happy smile from a client when they see their finished home… all these give me a real high and are motivation enough to keep going for more.

From learning not to hand over my design ideas to a client until he is on board (Yup, I did that, and the client vanished with my ideas.) to making all the dozens of checklists we do to keep all our orders and payments organised, a whole lot of lessons have been learnt… and are being learnt every day.

Like I said earlier, the journey has only just begun and I have a long way to go before I can label it as ‘successful’. And, I am now looking to expand – to be able to take on all the work that comes my way. So, the struggle now is to gradually to build up a good team. I am sure with every stage of the business there will be new goals and new struggles… I guess that’s what makes the journey exciting! – says Rittika.
